TL;DR
- Your products are probably already in AI shopping tools. Shopify's agentic storefronts are “active by default for eligible stores,” sharing products with channels such as ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and Gemini, Microsoft Copilot and Meta.
- Meta became a channel on September 8, 2026, the same day Meta launched Muse, a personal AI agent that can shop for people. Muse is US-only for now.
- On September 21, Shopify and Meta announced Shop Pay checkout inside Muse “on all Shopify stores.” A go-live date hasn't been published.
- You stay the merchant of record, and Shopify says there are no extra fees for selling through Meta's direct checkout. Standard payment processing fees still apply.
- You can turn channels off, but it can take up to 7 days for product data to stop being shared.
- The real work is product data. Shopify says AI searches powered by its Catalog converted at twice the rate of searches using scraped data.

What is Meta Muse?
Meta Muse is a personal AI agent that can complete tasks, including shopping, on a person's behalf. Meta launched it on September 8, 2026, describing it this way: “Muse is a personal AI agent. It doesn't just answer questions, it actually does the work.”

- Where it lives: the Muse app on iOS and Android, muse.ai and WhatsApp. Meta says it's “coming soon to AI glasses.”
- Where it's available: the US only, for now.
- How it pays: at launch, Muse checks out with Stripe's Link, which “generates a one-time-use card so your real card details stay hidden.” Meta listed Shop Pay as “coming soon.”
- Buyer control: “Muse checks with the person before sensitive actions like sending an email or making a purchase.”
Muse caught on fast. SiliconANGLE, citing CNBC, reported 730,000+ downloads in its first five days.

How does Meta Muse buy from Shopify stores?

Muse finds Shopify products through Shopify Catalog and can send shoppers through checkout without leaving Meta. Two separate things happened in September:
| Date | What happened |
|---|---|
| September 8, 2026 | Shopify added Meta as an AI channel in agentic storefronts. Products are shared with Meta by default |
| September 21, 2026 | Tobi Lütke announced Shopify is “partnering deeply with Muse to enable agentic checkout with Shop Pay on all Shopify stores” |
| September 28, 2026 | Shopify opened its checkout to browser-based AI agents through WebMCP |
Mark Zuckerberg posted the same message from Meta's side: “Teaming up with Shopify to make shopping and checkout easier in Muse. Shoppers find more. Shops sell more.” Shopify hasn't published a date for Shop Pay going live inside Muse, so treat it as announced, not live.
Under the hood, agents connect through the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP), which Shopify describes as “an open standard for integrating commerce with agents,” co-developed with Google.
Is my Shopify store already selling through AI channels?

Probably, yes. Shopify's Help Center says agentic storefronts are “active by default for eligible stores” and “by default, all available channels have access to your products through Shopify Catalog.”
The default admin setting, Allow Shopify to manage for me, keeps every channel active, enrolls you in new channels automatically and turns on direct checkout where it's supported.
Here's what each channel currently does, per Shopify's Help Center:
| Channel | Who can buy | Direct checkout | Fees |
|---|---|---|---|
| Meta (Muse and other Meta surfaces) | Customers in the US, Canada or Mexico | On by default for eligible stores | None beyond payment processing |
| Microsoft Copilot | US shoppers | On by default | None |
| Google AI Mode and Gemini | US stores selling to US customers | Rolling out | None |
| ChatGPT | Stores selling to US customers | No. Shoppers are sent to your store | None |
| Shop | Shop app users | Managed in the Shop channel | Standard |
To check yours, go to Sales channels > Agentic in your Shopify admin.

What happens when someone buys through Muse or Meta?
The order lands in your Shopify admin like any other order, attributed to Meta. Shopify's Help Center is clear on the rest:
- Merchant of record: “You remain the merchant of record.” You handle fulfillment, returns and customer service.
- Customer relationship: “you retain full ownership of the customer relationship and post-purchase experience.”
- Fees: “There are no fees associated with selling in Meta's direct checkout.” Standard payment processing still applies.
- Fallback: if checkout needs something Meta can't collect, the shopper is sent to your online store in Meta's in-app browser, with the cart kept.
What Meta's direct checkout doesn't support yet: subscriptions, bundles and customizable products, B2B-only products, local delivery and pickup, checkout blocks, and stores that require account sign-in. If you sell subscriptions or bundles, those shoppers will be sent to your store to finish.
Should you opt out of Meta Muse and agentic storefronts?
Most stores should stay in. AI shopping is already a real channel, and Shopify's numbers show the shoppers convert well:
- AI-driven traffic and orders to Shopify stores “tripled year over year” in Q2 2026.
- AI search conversion “runs nearly 80% higher than traditional organic search.”
- Half of AI-referred sessions land directly on a product page, “2.5 times more than what we see with traditional search.”
- 75% of AI-attributed orders came from outside Shopify's top 100 product categories, so this isn't just for big categories.

Reasons to limit access:
| Situation | What to do |
|---|---|
| Products that need consultation, fitting or approval | Turn off direct checkout, keep discovery |
| Subscriptions or bundles as your main offer | Keep discovery; Meta checkout will redirect to your store anyway |
| Wholesale-only or restricted products | Hide those products (see below) |
| You rely on GA4 or ad pixels for every sale | Know that these won't fire in Meta's direct checkout (see tracking) |
| Brand or pricing control concerns | Turn off specific channels rather than all of them |
How do you turn off Meta or other AI channels in Shopify?
Turn off the default setting, then control each channel. In your Shopify admin:
- Go to Sales channels > Agentic.
- Turn off Allow Shopify to manage for me.
- Choose what to change: turn off Shopify Catalog access for all third-party channels; turn off automatic enrollment in new channels, keeping current ones; or open a single channel, such as Meta, and toggle Shopify Catalog access or Direct checkout.
- Click Save.
Four things to know:
- It isn't instant. “It can take up to 7 days before your product data is no longer being shared through Shopify Catalog.”
- The two toggles aren't independent. Turning off Shopify Catalog access also turns off direct checkout for that channel. Turning off direct checkout alone leaves Catalog access on.
- Turning off direct checkout keeps you discoverable. Shoppers are sent to your store to buy instead.
- Products can still show up through web crawling even with Catalog access off.
To hide specific products from every AI channel, including Shop, set them to Unlisted or use the seo.hidden metafield. Unlisted also hides the product from your sitemap, Google and your own store search, so use it carefully.
Why did Amazon block Meta Muse?
Amazon blocked Muse from shopping on Amazon.com in September 2026, first reported by GeekWire on September 20. Amazon said third-party apps that buy on a customer's behalf “should operate openly and respect service provider decisions about whether or not to participate,” and that it had “requested that Meta remove Amazon from the experience.”
Reports say Amazon's objection was that Muse didn't identify itself as an agent and accessed account pages and purchase history.
Why it matters for Shopify merchants. Shopify went the other way. Instead of blocking agents, it gave them a sanctioned path through Shopify Catalog, UCP and Shop Pay. As AI agents send more shoppers, stores that agents can't reach lose that demand to stores they can.
What is WebMCP, and does it change my checkout?
WebMCP lets AI agents running inside a shopper's browser read, update and complete a Shopify checkout. Shopify added it on September 28, 2026.
Per Shopify's developer changelog:
- “Browser agents can now read and update Shopify checkouts using WebMCP tools for checkout.”
- The tools “use the same state as the checkout UI.”
- They “don't expose a new API or require merchant configuration.”
- The agent submits the order only after the buyer confirms, and hands control back when the buyer is needed, such as for 3D Secure.
What you need to do: nothing to turn it on. But it's one more reason to keep checkout clean. Required custom fields, pop-ups and odd steps slow agents down the same way they slow people down.

How do you make your products ready for AI shopping agents?
Give agents complete, structured product data. Shopify lists products in AI channels “by default with their title, description, options, images, price” and recommends “complete and well-structured product information.” Shopify also said on its Q2 call that AI searches powered by Catalog “converted twice the rate of those using scraped data.”
A practical checklist:
| Data | What good looks like |
|---|---|
| Titles | Brand, product type and key attribute: “Merino Wool Crew Sock, Cushioned” not “The Classic” |
| Descriptions | Answer the shopper's questions: materials, fit, size, use, care |
| Options and variants | Clear names (Size, Color) and every variant priced and in stock |
| Images | Clean product shots plus in-use images, with alt text |
| Category | Set Shopify's standard product category |
| Custom fields | If your key data lives in metafields, use Shopify Catalog Mapping so AI channels can read it |
| Policies | Terms of service, privacy policy and return policy published. Meta's channel requires all three |
For a full list, see our Shopify AI data readiness checklist.
How do you track sales from Muse and other AI channels?
Use Shopify's own reports, not your pixels. In Meta's direct checkout, “Google Analytics and custom pixels won't fire.” Only server-side checkout started and completed events are sent.
Where to look:
- Orders: attributed to the channel, such as Meta, under Sales channels > Agentic.
- Reports: Shopify's Explore section has a cross-channel Total sales report, with a panel called “Understand your performance on agentic channels.”
- What's included: “Sales data is an aggregate of referral-based sales and sales that happen through direct checkout.”
- Headless stores: agentic storefront analytics “aren't yet available for headless stores.”
If your ad platforms or attribution tools depend on pixels firing at checkout, expect them to under-count AI-channel sales. Reconcile against Shopify's reports.
What should Shopify merchants do this week?
- Check your settings in Sales channels > Agentic. Know which channels are on.
- Decide per channel, not all or nothing. Most stores should stay discoverable everywhere.
-
Hide products that shouldn't be sold by agents, using Unlisted or
seo.hidden. - Fix your top 20 products' data first: titles, descriptions, variants, category and images.
- Publish your policies if any are missing.
- Set up reporting so AI-channel sales show up in your weekly numbers.

Frequently asked questions
Can Meta Muse buy from my Shopify store?
Yes. Meta became an AI channel in Shopify's agentic storefronts on September 8, 2026, and products are shared with Meta by default. Shop Pay checkout inside Muse was announced on September 21, 2026.
Do I pay extra fees for orders from Muse or Meta?
No. Shopify says “there are no fees associated with selling in Meta's direct checkout.” Standard payment processing fees still apply.
Who owns the customer when an AI agent places the order?
You do. You remain the merchant of record and keep the customer relationship, fulfillment and returns.
How do I stop AI channels from selling my products?
Go to Sales channels > Agentic, turn off “Allow Shopify to manage for me,” then turn off Catalog access or direct checkout per channel. Turning off Catalog access also turns off direct checkout, and it can take up to 7 days to stop sharing.
Is Meta Muse available outside the US?
Not yet. Muse is rolling out in the US. Shopify's Meta direct checkout serves customers in the US, Canada and Mexico.
Do subscriptions work in Meta's direct checkout?
No. Subscriptions, bundles, customizable products and B2B-only products aren't supported. Those shoppers are sent to your store to finish checkout.
Why don't Muse sales show in Google Analytics?
GA4 and custom pixels don't fire in Meta's direct checkout. Use Shopify's agentic channel reports instead.
