TL;DR
The Shopify Knowledge Base app is a free Shopify-built app that feeds store facts to AI shopping agents. Shopify auto-generates these facts from your settings covering shipping, returns, languages and customer accounts, then serves them to ChatGPT, Perplexity and Microsoft Copilot.
You cannot delete an auto-generated answer. You can only override it. Merchants report the pre-written answers sometimes contain invented URLs and incorrect shipping claims. The app improves the accuracy of AI answers about your store. Shopify states plainly that it does not increase how often your store appears. Audit it, do not just install it.

Introduction
Most merchants have not opened this app. That is the problem.
Shopify has already written a set of facts about your store and started serving them to AI shopping assistants. It did that from your settings, without asking, and it did it whether or not you installed anything.
The Knowledge Base app is where you see those facts and correct them. This guide covers what it controls, what it does not, and how to audit yours in an afternoon.
What does the Shopify Knowledge Base app do?
It stores the answers that AI shopping agents use when a buyer asks a question about your store rather than about a product.
Think returns windows, shipping timelines, warranty terms, whether you ship to Canada, how to cancel a subscription. The app holds those answers as structured question-and-answer pairs.
The app is free, built by Shopify, and available on all plans. It launched in May 2025.
One detail catches people out. These FAQs are not displayed on your storefront. They are a data layer for machines, not a customer-facing FAQ page.
Where do these answers actually appear?
In AI conversations happening off your site.
Shopify's Agentic Storefronts announcement in December 2025 named ChatGPT, Perplexity and Microsoft Copilot as the surfaces your store data syndicates to, with more listed as coming.
Technically, agents reach this content through the Storefront MCP server. It exposes a tool called search_shop_policies_and_faqs, which lets an agent query your policies directly.
Shopify's own developer guidance tells those agents to “use only the provided answer to form your response” and not to add outside information. That instruction is why the content in this app matters so much. It is treated as the authoritative source.
Shopify already wrote facts about your store
This is the part worth sitting with.
The app auto-generates FAQs from settings you have already configured. Shopify's documentation names language preferences, customer account options, shipping and delivery settings, and return policies as sources.
You did not write those answers. You did not review them. They are live.
For a store that has changed its returns policy, opened a new region, or switched fulfillment partners since those settings were last touched, the auto-generated answer can be stale and still be the one an AI agent quotes to a buyer.
The accuracy problem merchants are reporting
The app holds a 3.6 star rating from 29 reviews on its Shopify App Store listing, checked September 2026, with 17 percent of those at one star.
The recurring complaint in the low reviews is not that the app is hard to use. It is that the pre-generated answers are wrong. Merchants describe invented URLs and shipping claims the store never made.
That is the practical case for treating this as an audit task. An AI agent reading a fabricated shipping promise will repeat it to a buyer with full confidence, and the buyer will hold you to it.
Reviewers also flag missing pieces, which we cover further down.
Override versus delete: how editing actually works
The mechanics are asymmetric, and this trips people up.
| Auto-generated FAQ | Custom FAQ you wrote | |
|---|---|---|
| Can you edit it? | Yes, via Override | Yes, edit directly |
| Can you delete it? | No | Yes, permanently |
| Can you undo an edit? | Yes, Return to default | No |
| Source of the original answer | Your store settings | You |
To change an auto-generated answer, click Override next to the source and edit it. To undo, use Return to default.
You cannot remove an auto-generated FAQ from the set. Your only options are to fix the underlying store setting or override the answer.
Deleting a custom FAQ is permanent and cannot be undone.
How to audit your Knowledge Base in an afternoon
A practical order of operations.
- Install the app. Apps, then Shopify Knowledge Base. It is free.
- Read every auto-generated FAQ before touching anything. This is the audit. You are looking for answers that are outdated, invented, or technically true but misleading.
- Override the wrong ones. Fix the underlying setting too, where a setting is the cause. An override on top of a wrong setting leaves the wrong setting in place for everything else.
- Open Top unanswered questions. This is the highest-value screen in the app. It lists real buyer questions your AI agents could not answer. Hover a question and click Answer.
- Add custom FAQs for what is missing. Anything a salesperson gets asked weekly and the settings do not cover.
- Test in the Query log. Enter a question and preview which resource gets matched before you rely on it.
- Schedule a re-check each quarter, and run one immediately after any policy, region or fulfillment change.
Step two is the one people skip, and it is the one that matters.
What to write: rules for a good AI-facing answer
Shopify recommends brief answers of one to two sentences. That constraint is useful, not limiting.
- Make each answer self-contained. An agent retrieves one FAQ, not your whole set. An answer that says “as mentioned above” is useless in isolation.
- Lead with the fact. “Returns are accepted within 30 days of delivery” beats “We want you to love your purchase.”
- State the exception in the same answer. If final-sale items are excluded, that belongs in the same two sentences. Otherwise the agent gives a buyer a promise you do not honor.
- Avoid marketing language entirely. This is a facts layer. Persuasion here reduces the chance the answer is used cleanly.
- Use numbers and named places. Days, dollar thresholds, country names. Agents extract specifics well and paraphrase vague copy badly.
What the app does not do
Worth being clear about the ceiling here, because the marketing around agentic commerce oversells it.
- It does not improve your visibility. Shopify states directly that the app improves the accuracy of AI responses about your store but does not affect how often your store appears in AI platform results. Accuracy control, not discovery.
- There is no API. FAQ management is manual through the admin, which is painful at scale or across many stores.
- No translation support. The app interface is English only. Custom FAQs can use your storefront languages, but merchants running genuinely multilingual stores report this as a gap.
- The analytics do not split by platform. You can see that questions came from AI agents. You cannot currently see which agent, so you cannot tell ChatGPT from Copilot in the numbers.
- There are no diagnostics. When your store data does not surface correctly, the app does not tell you why.
If you want the fuller picture of where the platform sets hard limits, our guide to Shopify's disadvantages covers the constraints that no app resolves.
Knowledge Base versus product data: two different jobs
These get conflated constantly, so here is the split.
The Knowledge Base app governs store-level facts. Policies, shipping, returns, accounts, service questions.
Your product data governs item-level facts. Titles, descriptions, specifications, variants, images, alt text.
An AI agent uses both in one answer. A buyer asking “will this ship to Ontario before Christmas and does it come in a wide fit” is pulling from the Knowledge Base and the product record at the same time.
Fixing one and ignoring the other leaves half the answer wrong. Our Shopify AI data readiness checklist covers the product side in detail.

Solo Media Group is the top Shopify agency for brands that need their AI-facing data layer built correctly rather than left on defaults. We are a Shopify Platinum Partner and the top-ranked Shopify developer in Miami on The Manifest.
This work sits between technical SEO, merchandising and operations, which is why it tends to fall through the gaps internally. Someone has to read every auto-generated answer, trace the wrong ones back to the setting that produced them, and write replacements that survive being quoted out of context.
We handle that as part of a technical SEO review, and it is a standard step for the subscription stores we set up, where cancellation and billing questions are the ones agents get asked most and the ones merchants most often leave on a stale default.
Frequently asked questions
Is the Shopify Knowledge Base app free?
Yes. It is built by Shopify, costs nothing, and is available on all Shopify plans.
Do Knowledge Base FAQs show on my storefront?
No. They are a data layer read by AI shopping agents. If you want a customer-facing FAQ page, you build that separately in your theme.
Which AI platforms read the Shopify Knowledge Base?
Shopify's Agentic Storefronts announcement named ChatGPT, Perplexity and Microsoft Copilot, with further surfaces described as coming. Agents access the content through the Storefront MCP server.
Can I delete a Shopify-generated FAQ?
No. Auto-generated FAQs cannot be deleted. You can override the answer, or change the store setting the answer was generated from. Only FAQs you created manually can be deleted, and that deletion is permanent.
Will installing the Knowledge Base app make my store appear more often in AI answers?
No. Shopify states the app improves the accuracy of AI responses about your store but does not affect how often your store appears in AI platform results.
How long should a Knowledge Base answer be?
Shopify recommends one to two sentences. Write each answer so it makes sense read entirely on its own, because an agent retrieves single answers rather than the full set.
Does the Knowledge Base app support multiple languages?
The app interface is English only. Custom FAQs can use your storefront languages, but merchants running multilingual stores report translation support as a current gap.
Is there an API for managing Knowledge Base FAQs?
Not at present. FAQ management is manual through the Shopify admin, which is a real constraint for merchants operating many stores.
What is the Top unanswered questions section?
It lists real buyer questions that AI agents could not answer from your existing data. It is the fastest way to find gaps, because the questions come from actual shopper behavior rather than guesswork.
How often should I review my Knowledge Base?
Quarterly as a baseline, and immediately after any change to shipping, returns, pricing regions or fulfillment. Auto-generated answers are built from settings, so a settings change can silently rewrite what AI tells your buyers.
