Solo Media Group is a Shopify SEO agency that fixes what Shopify doesn't handle on its own: duplicate URLs, filtered collection pages, thin content, slow apps and broken redirects. We also optimize stores for AI search, so your products and answers show up in AI Overviews and tools like ChatGPT. Because we build Shopify stores too, we fix SEO problems in the theme and code, not just in a report. Engagements start at $150 an hour, with retainers from $3,000 a month.

What does a Shopify SEO agency do?
A Shopify SEO agency improves how your store is crawled, indexed and ranked in Google and AI search. That covers technical fixes Shopify doesn't make for you, content for collection and product pages, structured data, site speed, internal linking, international setup and protecting rankings through migrations and redesigns.
Our Shopify SEO services cover:
- Technical SEO. Crawl control through Shopify's editable robots.txt.liquid file, duplicate URL and canonical cleanup, filtered collection URLs, indexation and sitemaps.
- Collection and product content. Unique, search-led copy for the pages that actually earn traffic and revenue.
- Structured data. Product, review, FAQ and organization markup, so search engines and AI tools understand your pages.
- Site speed and Core Web Vitals. App audits, image work and theme fixes. See our Shopify speed optimization service.
- International SEO. Shopify Markets setup for domains, subfolders and languages.
- Migrations and redesigns. Redirect mapping, content audits and launch monitoring.
- AI search optimization. Server-rendered content, answer-first pages and clean product data for AI shopping channels.
Is Shopify good for SEO?
Yes. Shopify handles the technical basics: it generates a sitemap, adds canonical tags, provides SSL, and lets you edit robots.txt. With Shopify Markets, it handles hreflang tags, canonical URLs and sitemaps for international stores. Its limits are fixed URL prefixes, duplicate product URLs, filter-generated pages and app scripts that slow your store.
| What Shopify handles for you | What still needs work |
|---|---|
| A sitemap at /sitemap.xml | Fixed URL prefixes such as /products/ and /collections/, which you can't remove |
| Canonical tags pointing collection-path product URLs to the main /products/ URL | Internal links that still point to collection-path URLs |
| SSL and HTTPS | Filtered and sorted collection URLs that create near-duplicate pages |
| An editable robots.txt, through robots.txt.liquid | Thin collection pages with little unique content |
| Hreflang, canonicals and sitemaps for configured markets | App scripts that slow pages and hurt Core Web Vitals |
| Editable titles and meta descriptions | Structured data beyond what your theme outputs |

Which Shopify SEO problems do you fix most?
The ones Shopify's defaults don't solve: duplicate URLs from filters and collection paths, thin collection pages, missing structured data, slow pages caused by apps, and broken redirects after a migration or redesign. On headless stores, we also fix pages that render in the browser instead of on the server.
The Shopify SEO stack
- Filtered and sorted collection URLs. Each filter combination can create a new, near-duplicate URL. We control them through robots.txt.liquid or noindex rules, so Google spends its crawl on pages that matter.
- Duplicate product URLs. Shopify's canonical tags handle collection-path duplicates, but themes often link to those paths internally. We point internal links at the main product URL.
- Thin collection pages. Collections often target the most valuable searches but carry only a product grid. We add useful, unique content without pushing products down the page.
- Missing or broken structured data. Product, review and FAQ markup helps search engines and AI tools read your pages correctly.
- Slow pages. Apps that load scripts on every page are the usual cause. Removing them often helps more than any code change.
- Broken redirects. Shopify only applies a redirect when the old URL no longer loads, which catches many teams out after a migration.
How do you protect rankings during a migration or redesign?
By mapping every changed URL to a one-to-one 301 redirect, keeping ranking content intact, and monitoring daily after launch. Shopify's own SEO migration guide says traffic should fully recover within a few weeks for small sites to months for large ones.
That guidance comes from Shopify's SEO migration guide. Shopify allows 100,000 redirects on standard plans and 20 million on Plus, and redirects only fire when the old URL returns a 404.
For Lifelines, we consolidated a separate marketing site and Shopify storefront into one custom Shopify build, including the domain and SEO migration. After launch, sessions rose 171%, sales 78% and orders 53%, per the Lifelines case study. We've completed 75+ replatforms and builds, including Wild Planet Foods.
The step-by-step process is in our Shopify store redesign guide and on our Shopify Plus migration page.
How do you optimize a Shopify store for AI search?
Make your content readable without JavaScript, structure pages so they answer questions directly, add structured data, and keep product data clean. AI shopping channels such as ChatGPT get Shopify products through Shopify Catalog, while AI search crawlers read raw HTML. This is sometimes called generative engine optimization, or GEO.
How AI tools reach your store
Two different paths matter:
- AI shopping channels. ChatGPT, Copilot and Google's AI Mode get your products through Shopify Catalog and your sales channels, as Shopify explains in its guide to how agentic commerce works. Clean titles, descriptions, attributes and variants decide how well you surface.
- AI search crawlers. The crawlers behind ChatGPT search, Claude and Perplexity read raw HTML. A late-2024 Vercel study found none of the major AI crawlers run JavaScript, so content must render on the server.
On top of that, AI tools tend to quote pages that answer clearly: question headings, a direct answer up front, tables, sourced facts and FAQ markup. We use the same approach on our own site.
Is headless Shopify better for SEO?
Not automatically. A headless storefront can be fast and flexible, but it must render content on the server, or search engines and AI crawlers may see an empty page. A well-built Liquid theme renders on the server by default. Choose headless for business reasons, not SEO.
Our guide to Shopify headless commerce covers when headless is worth it.
Is WordPress or Shopify better for SEO?
Both can rank well. WordPress gives you more control over URL structure and site architecture, which suits content-heavy sites. Shopify handles more technical SEO for you out of the box and is built for selling, with a blog for content. For an ecommerce store, Shopify's SEO limits are manageable with the right setup.
The bigger question is usually the business: if you're selling products, Shopify's checkout, apps and integrations outweigh WordPress's extra URL control for most brands.
What does Shopify SEO cost?
Our Shopify SEO work runs on retainers from $3,000 a month for 20 hours, or $150 an hour in blocks from $1,500 for focused projects such as a technical audit or a migration plan. Full rebuilds and replatforms start at $20,000. Every engagement gets a line-item scope.
| Engagement | Price | Typical scope |
|---|---|---|
| Hourly | $150 per hour | One specific fix |
| Hour block | From $1,500 (10 hours) | A technical audit, redirect plan or collection content sprint |
| Retainer | From $3,000 per month (20 hours) | Ongoing technical SEO, content and AI search work |
| Rebuild or replatform | From $20,000 | A new store or migration with SEO protection built in |
How do you choose the best Shopify SEO agency?
The best Shopify SEO agency can fix problems in your theme and code, not just report them, and can show results with sources. Ask whether they build on Shopify, how they handle redirects in a migration, what they'd fix first, and how they'll measure progress. Avoid anyone guaranteeing rankings.
How we'd judge any agency, and our evidence:
| What to look for | Solo Media Group's evidence |
|---|---|
| They can implement, not just advise | We build Shopify stores: 75+ replatforms and builds since 2018 |
| Migration experience | Lifelines' domain and SEO migration, after which sessions rose 171% |
| Independent ratings | Shopify Platinum Partner, the top of five tiers; 5.0 from 38 reviews on the Shopify Partner Directory; 4.9 from 48 on Clutch |
| Honest promises | No ranking guarantees; we report on organic sessions, rankings and revenue |
We're judging ourselves here, so ask any agency you're considering for the same evidence. Clutch and Shopify's Partner Directory both list Shopify SEO agencies you can compare.
How do you measure Shopify SEO results?
By organic outcomes, not activity. We track organic sessions and revenue by landing page, rankings for your most valuable pages, indexed pages, Core Web Vitals, and how often AI tools cite or recommend your store. Every report shows what changed and what we'll do next.
- Organic sessions and revenue by landing page, compared with a baseline.
- Rankings for the pages and searches that earn revenue, not vanity terms.
- Indexation: which pages Google indexes, and which it shouldn't.
- Core Web Vitals from real users.
- AI visibility: whether AI tools mention or cite your store for your key questions.
Frequently asked questions
Does Shopify have built-in SEO?
Yes, the basics. Shopify generates a sitemap, adds canonical tags, provides SSL, and lets you edit titles, meta descriptions and robots.txt. With Shopify Markets, it also handles hreflang tags for international stores. What it doesn't do is fix duplicate URLs from filters, write your content, or keep apps from slowing your pages.
Does changing your Shopify theme affect SEO?
It can. A new theme can change page content, headings, internal links, speed and structured data, and any changed URLs need redirects. Most of the risk is avoidable with a baseline, a content audit and one-to-one redirects before launch. Our Shopify store redesign guide covers the process.
Do Shopify tags help SEO?
Rarely on their own. Tag-filtered collection pages often create thin or near-duplicate URLs, which is why many stores keep them out of search through robots.txt or noindex rules. Well-built collection pages with unique content are usually the better way to target a search term.
What is the best SEO app for Shopify?
There isn't one app that does Shopify SEO. Most stores need few SEO apps, because the theme, content and site structure matter more, and every app can add scripts that slow pages. Use apps for specific jobs, such as image compression or structured data, and audit them regularly.
How long does Shopify SEO take to work?
Technical fixes can show up once Google recrawls the affected pages, which is often within weeks. Content and authority work usually takes several months to move rankings. Anyone promising guaranteed rankings in a fixed time is guessing.
Do you work with Shopify Plus stores?
Yes. Shopify Plus stores add SEO work around expansion stores, international markets and larger catalogs. We're a Shopify Platinum Partner and handle Plus builds, migrations and SEO.
