What breaks most often, ranked
From our own projects, in the order we see them:
- Inventory drift. Two systems both writing to stock. Symptom: overselling, or phantom stock nobody can find. Cause: no source of truth.
- SKU mismatches. The ERP has one convention, Shopify has another, and nobody mapped the exceptions. Symptom: orders that fail silently.
- Partial fulfilments. Order splits across locations or shipments that the ERP has no concept of. Symptom: customers told their order shipped when half of it did.
- Returns. RMAs authored in one system and invisible in the other. Symptom: refunded stock never returns to sellable.
- Tax and currency rounding. Cent-level differences that finance notices at month-end close.
- Order status vocabulary. "Complete" means something different in each system, and reporting quietly diverges.
Every one of these is a design problem, not a code problem. They are prevented in scoping, not fixed in QA.
When you don't need an ERP integration
- You don't have an ERP yet. Buying one in order to integrate it is the wrong order of operations.
- Your order volume is low enough that manual entry is cheaper. At 30 orders a day, someone enters them in an hour. At 300 it's untenable. Somewhere between those the integration pays for itself — do that arithmetic before committing.
- The requirement is really a process problem. Some integrations get commissioned to automate a workflow that shouldn't exist. We'd rather point that out in scoping than build it and invoice you.
- Nobody will own it afterwards. Integrations break when either platform ships a change. Without a maintenance owner, you're funding a future outage.
