TL;DR
- Variants: every Shopify plan now allows up to 2,048 variants per product, up from 100, since October 15, 2025. Products are still limited to 3 options, such as Size, Color and Fit.
- Swatches: native color swatches work when you connect your Color option to Shopify's color category metafield. No app needed on a theme that supports swatches.
- Size charts: Shopify has no native size chart. Most apparel themes include one, including Dawn and Horizon. Size and fit are the top return reason: 53% of US apparel brands and retailers say so.
- Combined Listings: groups up to 60 separate products into one listing with its own URL. It's only available on Shopify Plus and enterprise plans.
- The big decision: one product with color variants, one product per color, or Combined Listings. The right choice depends on SEO, images and how you merchandise.

How should you set up apparel products on Shopify?
Set up each style as one product with Size and Color as options, then decide whether colors stay as variants or become separate products. That one decision affects your collection pages, your SEO and how many apps you'll need.
Most apparel stores use two or three options:
| Option | Example values | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Size | XS, S, M, L, XL or 28, 30, 32 | Always a variant |
| Color | Black, Navy, Olive | Variant or separate product (see below) |
| Fit or Length | Regular, Slim, Tall or 30″, 32″, 34″ | Use only if it changes stock |
Anything that doesn't change stock or price, like a monogram or gift note, shouldn't be an option. Use line item properties or a product add-on instead, so you don't burn one of your three option slots.
How many variants can a Shopify product have?
Up to 2,048 variants and 3 options. Shopify raised the variant limit from 100 to 2,048 for all merchants on October 15, 2025.
| Limit | Value |
|---|---|
| Variants per product | 2,048 (all plans, since October 15, 2025) |
| Options per product | 3 |
| Products in one Combined Listing | 60 (Plus and enterprise only) |
| Variants across a Combined Listing | 2,048 by default |
One catch: Shopify warns that merchants using apps that are not on its in-support GraphQL product APIs “may have a downgraded or broken experience when creating or viewing products with more than 100 variants.” If a style has more than 100 variants, test your reviews, search, feed and inventory apps before you launch it.

Importing a large catalog by CSV? Shopify's product CSV allows 3 options per product, and files must use UTF-8 encoding and stay under 15 MB. Split bigger catalogs into several files.
Should each color be a variant or a separate product?
It depends on how shoppers find and compare your colors. Here's how the three approaches compare:
| Approach | How it works | Best for | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|---|
| One product, color as a variant | One URL, color and size picked on the page | Basics with many colors, simple catalogs | Only one tile per style in collections. Colors don't get their own search pages |
| One product per color | Separate product and URL for each color | Hero colors that people search for by name, like “olive chore jacket” | Collections fill with near-duplicates. Reviews and inventory split across products |
| Combined Listings (Plus) | Separate products per color, grouped into one parent listing | Plus brands that want both: per-color products and one shopping page | Plus only. Some apps don't work on combined pages |

Rule of thumb:
- If shoppers search by color, or each color has its own photo shoot and story, give colors their own products.
- If colors are interchangeable, like a tee in 12 shades, keep them as variants and use swatches.
What are Shopify Combined Listings?
Combined Listings is a Shopify app that groups separate products into one listing, so they appear as variants of one parent product. Shopify says it lets you “combine products into an enhanced product listing on your online storefront.”
Key facts from Shopify's Help Center:
- Plans: “available only on Plus and enterprise commerce plans.”
- Size: “You can add up to 60 products to a combined listing.”
- Parent page: the parent can have its own title, description, URL and image gallery.
- Themes: “Combined listings display on free Shopify themes in version 15.0.0 or later.” Other themes may need code changes.
- Limits: combined listings “can't be added to a product bundle or added as a subscription product,” and “apps that display information on product pages in your online store might not be compatible.”
- Hidden parent: if the parent is set to Unlisted, it's hidden from collections and search, but its page stays reachable by direct URL.
When it's worth it: large fashion catalogs where each color needs its own product for inventory, ERP or marketplace reasons, but shoppers should still pick color on one page.
When to skip it: stores not on Plus, or products sold as subscriptions or bundles.

How do you add color swatches in Shopify?
Connect your Color option to Shopify's color category metafield. Your theme then shows swatches instead of text buttons. Shopify's steps:
- Choose a product category from Shopify's Standard Product Taxonomy, such as Apparel & Accessories > Clothing > Clothing Tops > Shirts.
- Edit the color entries under Category metafields. Add your brand's color names and set each swatch color or image.
- Connect the Color option to the metafield by clicking the dynamic source icon next to the option.
- Check your theme. If it has a variant picker block, swatches should display by default, and most themes let you choose the swatch shape.
Swatches only work on a variant that's connected to the color category metafield and its color entries, and you need “a theme that supports variant options with swatches.” Vintage themes need code edits.
Swatches in filters: in Shopify's Search & Discovery app, add a Color filter with the source set to Category metafield. Then check Include visual and choose Swatch, which shows small color swatches or patterns.
Tip for patterns: a solid color dot can't show a plaid or a camo print. Upload a small fabric image to the color entry, so the swatch shows the real pattern.

How do you add a size chart in Shopify?
Shopify doesn't have a built-in size chart, so use your theme's size chart feature or a metafield. Most apparel themes include one. On the Shopify Theme Store, Dawn, Horizon, Impulse, Prestige, Be Yours and Stiletto all list a size chart feature.
Three ways to set it up, from simplest to most flexible:
| Method | How it works | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Theme size chart + page | Create a page with your size table and link it in the theme's size chart setting | One size chart for the whole store |
| Metafield per product or product type | Store the chart in a metafield or metaobject and show the right one per product | Different charts for tops, bottoms and shoes |
| Size chart or fit app | An app shows charts, fit quizzes or size recommendations | Brands with high size-related returns |
Why it matters: size and fit drive most apparel returns. In Coresight Research's 2023 survey of decision-makers at US apparel brands and retailers, 53% named size or fit as the top reason for online returns, ahead of color at 16% and damage at 10%. A size chart is the minimum. Fit notes (“runs small, size up”) and model measurements (“model is 6′1″, wearing M”) go further.
Placement: put the size chart link right next to the size selector, not in a tab below the fold. Shoppers look for it at the moment they pick a size.
How should you handle variant images for apparel?
Give every color its own images, and make sure picking a color changes the gallery. Shoppers expect to see the exact color they chose before adding to cart.
- Assign a featured image to each color variant, so the main image updates when a color is selected.
- Shoot every color, not just the hero color. A navy jacket shown only in black creates “not as pictured” returns.
- Show the product on a body in at least one image per color, with the model's size noted.
- Keep file names and alt text specific: “olive-chore-jacket-front.jpg” and “Olive chore jacket, front view, worn by model in size M.”
How do you handle sold-out sizes?
Keep sold-out sizes visible but marked, and capture the demand. Hiding them makes shoppers think you never carried their size.
- Show sold-out sizes crossed out or grayed out in the variant picker. Most apparel themes do this by default.
- Add back-in-stock alerts. Horizon, Broadcast, Palo Alto and Local list this as a built-in theme feature. Others need an app.
- Use pre-orders for restocks if your theme or an app supports them.
How should apparel brands handle exchanges on Shopify?
Push exchanges over refunds, because most apparel returns are about size. Shopify's native returns let customers request a self-serve exchange for a different size or color, so you keep the sale instead of refunding it.
For tighter control, Shopify added return window overrides on September 29, 2026. You can now set a different return period “by market for specific collections, products, or variants” — longer or shorter than your default. If an item matches several overrides, the shortest one applies.
Example: keep a 30-day window for most of the store, but set 14 days for a sale collection. Final sale items still can't be returned, even if they match an override.
Where to set it: Settings > Policies > Return and cancellation rules, then pick the market and the collection, product or variant.
Check you have it first. Shopify's help documentation describes market-specific return and cancellation rules as an early access feature available to certain merchants, so the overrides may not be in your admin yet.

What's the apparel setup checklist?
| Area | Setup |
|---|---|
| Options | Size and Color as options. Fit or Length only if it changes stock |
| Colors | Variants with swatches, or separate products if colors are searched by name |
| Swatches | Color option connected to the color category metafield |
| Filters | Color filter with swatches in Search & Discovery |
| Size chart | Linked next to the size selector, by product type |
| Images | Featured image per color, on-body shots, model size noted |
| Sold out | Visible but marked, with back-in-stock alerts |
| Returns | Self-serve exchanges for a different size or color |
| Apps | Tested with more than 100 variants if any style exceeds that |
What are the most common apparel setup mistakes?
| Mistake | Result | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Using an option slot for monogram or gift wrap | Only 2 options left for Size and Color | Use line item properties or an add-on |
| Color names like “Color 1” or “Ocean Mist” with no swatch | Shoppers can't tell what they're picking | Connect swatches with real color values |
| One size chart for every product | Wrong measurements for bottoms or shoes | Use a chart per product type |
| No image per color | “Not as pictured” returns | Shoot and assign every color |
| Hiding sold-out sizes | Lost demand, confused shoppers | Show them marked, with alerts |
| Launching a 200-variant style without testing apps | Broken reviews, feeds or inventory sync | Test your apps above 100 variants first |
When do apparel brands need custom Shopify work?
Native features cover most apparel stores. Custom work makes sense when:
- You need fit finders or size recommendations built into the product page.
- Your catalog relies on Combined Listings and your theme or apps don't support it.
- Drops need countdowns, early access or purchase limits.
- You sell wholesale and DTC from the same catalog.
When Solo Media Group rebuilt apparel brand Alp N Rock on a Shopify 2.0 theme, the product pages were upgraded with metafields, variant swatches and upsell modules. The new theme loaded about 40% faster, reached 100% Shopify 2.0 template compatibility and had zero SEO impact (Alp N Rock case study).
