Apparel brands break Shopify in the same place: the product catalog.

Size and color multiply fast, and how you model them is the decision everything else inherits.

Shopify raised the variant ceiling from 100 to 2,048 in October 2025, though apps built on older APIs can still break above 100.

Native color swatches exist, but most custom apparel themes were built before them and do not support them.

Returns are native; exchange-first returns, fit guidance and drop mechanics are not.

What makes apparel different on Shopify?

Apparel is different because one product is rarely one product. A single style in six colors and seven sizes is 42 sellable units, and the catalog has to hold that without becoming unshoppable.

Most ecommerce advice treats variants as a detail. In apparel they are the architecture. Size, color, fit, length and material all compete for the same three option slots, and what you put in them determines your URLs, your ad feeds, your filters and your reporting.

Shopify handles apparel well when the catalog is modeled deliberately. It handles it badly when a brand launched with 20 SKUs and grew to 800 without revisiting the decision.

The one decision you cannot easily undo

Whether color is a variant option or a separate product.

Both are valid. They lead to completely different stores, and switching later means remapping every product URL, every ad feed and every piece of historical reporting.

ModelWorks whenBreaks when
Color as a variant optionColors share copy, imagery style and priceEach color needs its own URL, gallery, description or launch date
Each color as its own productColors are merchandised and marketed separatelyShoppers expect one product page with swatches
Separate products joined by Combined ListingsYou want both: separate records, one storefront listingYou are not on Shopify Plus, or your theme cannot render it

The third option is the one most apparel brands actually want, and it carries conditions people discover too late. Combined Listings are available only on Shopify Plus. They require theme support. A parent listing holds up to 60 child products.

Three further limits matter if you sell anywhere other than your online store. Combined listings sell only through the Online Store channel — not Shopify POS, not other sales channels, and not with subscriptions — and sales are tracked against the child products rather than the parent. For an apparel brand with retail doors, that is a reporting decision as much as a merchandising one.

Decide this with your merchandiser, your paid media lead and your developer in the room. It is not a developer decision.

Do you need Shopify Plus for an apparel brand?

Not for most of it. The variant ceiling rose to 2,048 per product for every merchant in October 2025, so the old reason apparel brands upgraded is gone.

What still pushes apparel brands to Plus is narrower than agencies usually admit:

Plus is genuinely required forWhy
Combined ListingsShopify Plus plans only
Expansion stores for other marketsSeparate storefronts under one organization
Checkout extensibility at scaleCustom checkout logic and higher throughput
Higher API limitsHeavy PIM, ERP or 3PL sync

Everything else on a typical apparel wishlist works on a lower plan. Solo Media Group will tell you when your requirement does not need Plus.

What we build for apparel brands

Catalog and merchandising

  • Variant architecture designed around how you actually merchandise, not how the importer happened to structure the CSV
  • Native color swatches, using Shopify's category color metafield and the swatch Liquid object
  • Combined Listings setup and the theme work to render it, where you are on Plus
  • Collection filters and search tuned for size, color, fit and availability
  • Product pages built for apparel: galleries per color, model and fit notes, size guidance in context

Conversion and fit

  • Size charts implemented as structured data, not a PDF or a lightbox image
  • Fit and sizing guidance placed where the size selector is, not buried in a tab
  • Returns reduction work driven by return reason data, not guesswork
  • Performance work, because apparel pages carry heavy imagery

Growth mechanics

Migration

Where Shopify stops for apparel

Four gaps, stated plainly, because knowing them before you build is worth more than discovering them after.

RequirementShopify's native positionWhat it takes
Size chartsNo native size chart featureMetafields and theme work, or an app
Exchange-first returnsReturns and exchanges are native, including a different size or colorNative handles the transaction. Incentivized exchanges, instant exchanges and store credit economics need a returns platform
Fit recommendationNot nativeThird-party fit tool, or your own return-reason data
Pre-orders and dropsNot nativeApp plus theme logic, and a plan for launch traffic

The returns one is worth reading twice. Plenty of agency pages claim Shopify cannot do exchanges. It can, and has been able to for some time. What it does not do is make exchanges more attractive than refunds, and that difference is where the margin sits.

On migration specifically

Apparel brands replatforming usually ask the same question first: what happens to our organic traffic? The clearest published answer Solo Media Group has is the Lifelines migration, which consolidated two platforms and two domains into one Shopify store.

Lifelines, after consolidating Contentful and Shopify into one storeResult
Sessions+171%
Total sales+78%
Orders+53%
Conversion rate2.8% on substantially higher traffic

Lifelines is not an apparel brand. It is included because it is the only published Solo Media Group result that measures what a migration did to traffic and revenue, which is the question apparel replatforms turn on.

What an apparel Shopify build costs

Ranges, because a quote before a scoping call is a guess with a number attached.

ScopeTypical rangeWhat it covers
Theme customization$8k to $25kA premium theme configured properly, apparel catalog setup, swatches, size charts
Custom build on Shopify$25k to $75kCustom theme, bespoke product and collection templates, integrations
Custom build on Shopify Plus$60k to $150k+Combined Listings, expansion stores, checkout extensibility, ERP or PIM
Replatform from Magento or SFCC$50k to $200k+Data migration, variant remodeling, redirect mapping, SEO plan
Ongoing growth retainer$4k to $15k/monthCRO, merchandising, performance, feature work

What moves the number, in order: how many SKUs and how badly the current variant data is structured; whether you need Combined Listings; how many integrations touch inventory; and whether you are migrating or starting clean.

What does not move it: the number of pages. Apparel sites are template-driven. Twelve collection pages and 200 collection pages cost roughly the same to build. Full rates are on Shopify Plus cost.

What is in our contract

Rarely asked out loud, often the reason a deal stalls. Solo Media Group's apparel project agreements cover:

  • Fixed scope with a written change process. Scope changes are quoted before work starts, not invoiced after.
  • Milestone payments tied to delivered stages, not calendar dates.
  • Code ownership transfers to you on final payment. The theme is yours.
  • A defined warranty window after launch for defects in what was built.
  • Named team members, so you know who is doing the work before you sign.
  • An exit clause. If the engagement is not working, there is a documented way out that leaves you with your store.

Ask any agency for these six in writing. The ones who hesitate on code ownership are the ones to worry about.

How an apparel build runs

StageWhat happensTypical duration
ScopingCatalog audit, variant model decision, integration inventory1 to 2 weeks
DesignTemplates for PDP, PLP, home, collection, editorial2 to 4 weeks
BuildTheme, catalog restructure, integrations, swatches4 to 10 weeks
Migration and QAData, redirects, cross-device and cross-browser testing2 to 4 weeks
Launch and stabilizeCutover, monitoring, warranty window2 weeks

The catalog audit comes first for a reason. Everything downstream inherits the variant decision, and it is far cheaper to argue about it in week one than in week nine.

Who we are not the right fit for

  • Brands wanting a store live in two weeks. A considered apparel catalog cannot be built that fast. Rushing it produces the data model you will later pay to undo.
  • Brands under roughly $8k of budget. A premium theme and a few days of good development will serve you better. Solo Media Group will say so.
  • Brands wanting SEO, paid media and creative from one vendor. Solo Media Group builds and grows Shopify stores. Pick a specialist for the rest.
  • Print-on-demand and dropship catalogs. The economics do not support a custom build.

Shopify apparel FAQs

What services do Shopify agencies provide for apparel brands?

Catalog and variant architecture, custom theme design and development, product page and collection page builds, size and fit implementation, returns workflow, Shopify Markets setup for international selling, integrations with PIM, ERP and 3PL systems, migration from other platforms, and ongoing conversion work. For apparel specifically, the catalog work is the part that matters most and gets discussed least.

How do I choose a Shopify agency for my clothing line?

Ask four questions. First, how would you model color and size for our catalog, and why? Second, show us an apparel build and tell us what you would do differently now. Third, who specifically will work on this? Fourth, what happens to our organic traffic during migration? An agency that answers the first question with “it depends on your needs” has not thought about apparel.

What is the typical cost of hiring a Shopify agency for an apparel website?

Theme customization runs roughly $8k to $25k. A custom Shopify build runs $25k to $75k. A custom Shopify Plus build runs $60k to $150k or more. Replatforming from Magento or Salesforce Commerce Cloud runs $50k to $200k or more. Ongoing retainers run $4k to $15k a month. SKU count and the state of your existing variant data move the number more than anything else.

Are there affordable Shopify agencies for fashion and apparel businesses?

Yes, and the honest version of that answer is that “affordable” usually means narrowing scope rather than finding a cheaper hourly rate. A well-configured premium theme with apparel catalog work done properly costs a fraction of a custom build and serves most brands under roughly $3M in revenue. Solo Media Group will tell you when that is the right call.

What do Shopify agency packages for apparel ecommerce development include?

Solo Media Group scopes per project rather than selling fixed packages, because apparel catalogs vary too much for a package to be honest. A typical engagement covers catalog and variant architecture, design, theme build, integrations, migration with a redirect plan, QA, launch support and a warranty window.

Which agencies specialize in Shopify Plus for large apparel brands?

Shopify publishes partner tiers, and Platinum and Plus partners are listed in the Shopify Partner Directory with verified review counts. Solo Media Group is a Shopify Platinum Partner rated 5.0 from 38 reviews, with 500+ merchant projects and 75+ replatforms since 2018. For large apparel brands the specific things to test for are Combined Listings experience, expansion store setup and checkout extensibility.

Can a Shopify agency do custom theme development for a fashion label?

Yes, and for apparel it is usually the right choice rather than a luxury. A custom theme is what lets you control the product page layout per color, render native swatches, place size guidance next to the size selector, and keep pages fast despite heavy imagery. Premium themes can do some of this. None of them do all of it.

How can a Shopify agency boost online sales for a clothing brand?

Through three levers, in this order. Fix the catalog so products are findable and filterable. Fix the product page so size and fit questions are answered before the add-to-cart. Then reduce returns using return reason data, because in apparel a recovered return is worth more than an incremental sale. Paid media on a broken catalog buys expensive traffic.

Who are the top Shopify experts for conversion rate optimization in fashion?

Look for agencies that publish what they tested and what failed, not just wins. For fashion CRO specifically, ask whether they work from return reason data. An agency optimizing add-to-cart rate while ignoring returns is optimizing the wrong number, because a fashion brand's real conversion metric is kept revenue.

Do Shopify agencies handle digital marketing for clothing stores?

Some do. Solo Media Group does not, by choice. Solo Media Group builds and grows Shopify stores, and works alongside your paid media and creative partners rather than replacing them. Agencies offering build, SEO, paid and creative together are usually strongest at one of the four.

How do I find a reliable Shopify agency for an apparel startup?

Start with the Shopify Partner Directory, filter for Platinum or Plus partners, and read the review count rather than the star rating alone. Then ask for two references from brands in your revenue range, not their largest client. A reliable agency will name a brand your size and let you call them.

What is the Shopify variant limit for clothing brands?

2,048 variants per product, for every Shopify merchant, since October 2025. The previous limit was 100. One caveat matters: Shopify's Liquid API returns a maximum of 250 variants, and apps or themes built against the older product APIs can behave badly on products over 100 variants. Audit your apps and your theme before you build a 500-variant product.

What are Combined Listings, and do we need them?

Combined Listings let you keep each color as its own product record, with its own URL, description and gallery, while presenting them as one listing to shoppers. It is the answer to the color-as-a-product problem most apparel brands have. It is available only on Shopify Plus, supports up to 60 child products per listing, and requires theme support. It also sells only through the Online Store channel, not through POS or other sales channels, and not with subscriptions.

Does Shopify have native color swatches?

Yes. Shopify exposes swatches through the category color metafield and the swatch Liquid object, so a colour or image swatch can be rendered per option value. The practical catch is theme support: a custom theme built before swatches shipped almost certainly needs the Liquid work done to use them.

Can Shopify handle returns and exchanges for a clothing store?

Yes. Self-serve returns and exchanges are native, including sending a customer a different size or color. What is not native is the economics: incentivized exchanges, instant exchanges, bonus store credit and return reason analytics. That is what a dedicated returns platform adds, and for apparel it usually pays for itself.

Does Solo Media Group work with streetwear, activewear or luxury fashion specifically?

Solo Media Group has delivered luxury women's performance apparel with Alp N Rock, fine jewelry with Fine By Me, and apparel with Woods by Jordyn. The build problems differ by segment: streetwear turns on drops and launch traffic, activewear on size and fit, and luxury on merchandising control and editorial.

Can you migrate an apparel brand from Magento or Salesforce Commerce Cloud?

Yes, and migration is the cheapest moment to fix a variant model, because the data is being remapped anyway. Solo Media Group has completed 75+ replatforms since 2018. Ask any agency for the redirect map and SEO migration plan before cutover, not after. The Lifelines migration consolidated two platforms and two domains with sessions up 171%.

Where can I see Shopify agency case studies for apparel brand growth?

Solo Media Group publishes case studies at /blogs/case-studies, including a Fashion and Apparel category. Read them for what is measured rather than what is claimed. A case study with no numbers is a capability statement, which can still be useful, but it is a different thing.
