TL;DR
A bundle builder is the highest-leverage place to convert a one-time buyer into a subscriber, because it catches them at the moment they have already decided to spend more.
We built one from scratch for Bravo Pouches, a veteran-founded energy pouch brand, wired into Stay AI and Klaviyo. According to Stay AI's published case study:
- 563%recurring subscription revenue growth
- 616%recurring order growth
- 1,436active subscribers
- 67 → 780new subscribers, February to June
The mechanism matters more than the numbers. Below is exactly what we built and why each piece is there.
What is a Shopify bundle builder?
A bundle builder — often called build-your-own-bundle or BYOB — lets a customer assemble their own multi-item purchase rather than buying a pre-set kit or a single product.
The commercial logic is straightforward. Your customer acquisition cost is identical whether someone buys one item or six. A bundle builder increases what that acquisition is worth without increasing what it cost.
Two formats, and they behave differently. Fixed bundles are curated by you — simpler to set up, easier inventory tracking, less decision-making for the shopper. Build-your-own gives the customer control, which vendor data suggests converts better than pre-selected bundles, though those figures come from app companies rather than independent studies.
The version that actually moves the needle does something else entirely: it uses the bundle moment to convert the customer to a subscription.
What we built for Bravo Pouches
Bravo had a strong brand, a veteran-founded story, and a genuinely differentiated product — nicotine-free, crash-free energy pouches. What they did not have was any digital infrastructure. We built the entire Shopify store from zero, and the bundle builder was the commercial center of it.
The segmented progress bar. Ten segments, filling as the customer adds cans. Not decoration — it converts an abstract decision ("how many should I get?") into a visible goal. The customer sees where they are and what is ahead.
A 3-can minimum with no ceiling. The floor sets the baseline order value. Removing the upper limit means a customer who wants twelve is not stopped at eight.
Real-time per-unit pricing. As the bundle grows, the price per can drops visibly. This is the single most important element. The customer is not told they are saving — they watch it happen, and the discount becomes something they earned rather than something you offered.
Free shipping unlocked at five cans. Positioned two above the minimum, so almost every customer who reaches the floor can see the next threshold. Shopify puts free shipping as a top purchase driver for 76% of US shoppers, with 78% willing to add items to qualify — and a visible threshold converts that preference into behavior.
A cart drawer built as a purchase experience. Subscription toggle wired to Stay AI, savings visibility, free-shipping progress, and a "You Might Also Like" upsell rail. Most stores treat the cart as a receipt. It is the last place you can change the order.
A two-step popup segmenting by intent. Before capturing the email, it asks why — quitting nicotine, quitting energy drinks, or wanting better focus. That answer routes into a different Klaviyo flow. The same email address is worth considerably more when you know what problem the person is solving.
A live "pouches sold" counter. Social proof that updates rather than sits.

Anatomy of a Bundle Builder
Six decisions that turn a bigger order into a subscription.
Segmented progress bar
Turns "how many should I get?" into a visible goal. The customer sees where they are and what's ahead.
3-can minimum, no upper limit
The floor sets baseline order value. No ceiling means a customer who wants twelve isn't stopped at eight.
Real-time per-unit pricing
Price per can drops visibly as the bundle grows. The saving is earned, not offered.
Free shipping at 5, two above the floor
Almost everyone who clears the minimum can see the next threshold.
Subscription toggle in the cart drawer
Asked at maximum momentum, when the customer has already chosen to spend more.
Frictionless terms, stated upfront
Cancel, skip, swap flavors, one click. The discount gets attention; removing commitment risk closes.
Why the subscription converts here
Bravo Pouches results per Stay AI's published case study: 563% recurring revenue growth, 616% recurring order growth, 1,436 active subscribers.
Why the bundle moment converts subscribers
Here is the strategic point, and it is the part most brands miss.
A customer building a bundle has already decided to spend more than they planned. They are in an expansive frame of mind, actively adding rather than deliberating. That is the cheapest moment you will ever have to ask for a subscription.
Compare it to the alternatives. A post-purchase email asks someone who has finished buying to start again. A subscription toggle on a single-product page asks for commitment before value is established. The bundle builder asks at the moment of maximum momentum.
And the discount stacking makes the arithmetic obvious. The bundle discount is already visible. The subscription discount stacks on top. The customer is not evaluating whether subscribing is worth it in the abstract — they are watching a number they already care about get better.
Then the terms remove the anxiety. Cancel anytime, skip anytime, swap flavors, one click. The discount gets attention; removing commitment risk is what closes.
What to expect, honestly
Vendor-published figures put AOV lift from bundling at roughly 20 to 35%, with strong implementations reaching higher, and suggest subscription bundles churn less than single-product subscriptions. Treat those as directional — they come from companies selling bundle apps, not from independent research.
What is more reliable is the mechanism. A bundle builder increases order value because the customer chooses to buy more, and it increases subscription conversion because it asks at the right moment. Both are structural rather than promotional.
The metrics that tell you whether it is working:
- Bundle AOV against overall store AOV — the gap is your clearest proof
- Attachment rate — average items per bundle
- Subscription conversion rate on bundle orders versus single-product orders
- Which combinations get chosen — this shapes your next iteration and your merchandising
One caveat worth building in from the start: a bundle builder adds front-end weight, and a slow builder converts worse than no builder. Performance is part of the build, not a later phase.
Custom build or app?
We built Bravo's from scratch, and for most brands that would be the wrong choice. Worth being direct about that.
Use an app if your bundle logic is standard — fixed quantity tiers, simple discounts, a modest product pool. The Shopify App Store has capable options starting around $10 a month, and a custom build for that use case is money badly spent.
Build custom when the bundle logic is genuinely unusual, when it needs to integrate with subscription and cart UX as one system rather than three apps competing, or when the bundle experience is the brand experience. Bravo's needed a segmented progress bar, a specific pricing matrix, free-shipping logic and a subscription toggle in a custom cart drawer, working as one flow on mobile and desktop.
We have built the same capability more than once — Medik8's reusable bundle builder runs across every market they sell in, which is a different problem again: one component, many storefronts, market-specific pricing.
The practical test: if you can describe your bundle in one sentence, install an app. If describing it takes a paragraph and includes the word "and" several times, you are looking at custom app development.
Frequently asked questions
Do bundles actually increase average order value?
Yes, though published figures come mostly from app vendors. Reported lifts commonly sit in the 20 to 35% range. The mechanism is sound regardless of the exact number: acquisition cost is the same whether someone buys one item or six, so any increase in items per order improves unit economics directly.
Build-your-own or pre-selected bundles — which converts better?
Build-your-own generally converts better according to vendor data, because customers choosing their own combination feel ownership rather than being sold a pre-made kit. Fixed bundles are simpler to set up and track, and they reduce decision fatigue. Start fixed if your catalog is small; move to build-your-own once you know which combinations customers actually choose.
How do you stop discount stacking from destroying margin?
Check your Shopify admin under Discounts to see whether codes are set to combine, and configure your bundle app's discount logic to take priority over automatic or manual codes. Then run a real test order and confirm the final price is what you intended. Stacking that is deliberate is a strategy; stacking that is accidental is a leak.
Can bundles work with Shopify subscriptions?
Yes, and this is where most of the value sits. Platforms including Stay AI, Recharge, Skio and Ordergroove support subscription selling plans on bundles. The strongest pattern is offering the subscription discount on top of the bundle discount at the moment the customer is already assembling their order.
What is a good minimum quantity for a bundle builder?
Low enough that a first-time buyer will clear it, high enough to raise your baseline. Bravo's is three, with free shipping unlocking at five — the gap between the two is deliberate, giving almost everyone who reaches the floor a visible next goal.
Does a free shipping threshold belong in the bundle builder?
Yes. Shopify puts free shipping as a top purchase driver for 76% of US shoppers, and 78% say they will add items to qualify for it. A visible progress indicator converts that preference into additional items. Position the threshold above your minimum, not at it.
How does inventory tracking work with bundles?
It depends on the implementation. Modern approaches using Shopify's Cart Transform function process a bundle as a single clean line item at checkout, and Shopify derives the bundle's availability from whichever component has the least stock. Older methods that create bundle SKUs separately can drift out of sync. Confirm which approach you are getting before you commit.
What metrics should I track after launching a bundle builder?
Bundle AOV against overall store AOV, attachment rate, subscription conversion on bundle orders versus single-product orders, and which product combinations are chosen most. Launch is the start of the iteration, not the end of it.
Do I need a developer to build one?
Not usually. Apps handle standard bundle logic well. You need development when the bundle, cart and subscription experience have to work as one integrated system, or when the pricing logic is genuinely custom.
Does a bundle builder work for B2B or wholesale?
Yes, and the logic changes. Wholesale buyers order by case rather than unit, pricing is account-specific rather than volume-based, and approval workflows may sit between the cart and the order. That is Shopify B2B development territory rather than a bundle app.
What does a custom bundle builder cost to build?
It depends on the pricing logic, whether it integrates with subscriptions, and how much of the cart experience is custom. Our design-and-build projects start around $20,000 as a line-item estimate — see Shopify Plus cost for the full breakdown.
