We build wholesale on Shopify — company accounts, negotiated pricing, net terms, gated portals and the ERP connections behind them. One catalog, one inventory, one admin, running DTC and B2B together.
What to expect
What Shopify B2B development involves
Shopify B2B development means configuring Shopify's native wholesale features — company accounts, pricing catalogs, quantity rules and payment terms — then building what those features don't cover: quote and approval workflows, buyer onboarding, ERP and EDI connections, and the storefront experience your buyers actually log into.
Most of the value is in the second half. Shopify's native B2B object model is genuinely good and improving quickly, so a competent build starts by configuring what already exists rather than reaching for apps. The engineering work concentrates where native features stop: multi-step approvals, credit checks, negotiated contract pricing that changes quarterly, and getting orders into the system your finance team already runs on.
You may not need Shopify Plus for B2B
Shopify B2B is available on all paid plans. On 2 April 2026 Shopify moved company accounts, pricing catalogs, net payment terms, purchase order numbers, self-serve ordering and Shopify Flow automations to Basic, Grow and Advanced at no extra cost. Before that date these were Plus-only, and most published guidance still says so.
We sell Shopify Plus builds, so read the next sentence in that light: if you have ten to twenty wholesale accounts grouped into two or three pricing tiers, you probably do not need Plus for B2B alone. A great deal of content currently ranking for these searches predates April 2026 and will push you toward a $2,300 per month plan you may not need, or toward a third-party wholesale app stack replicating features Shopify now ships natively.
Check the publication date on anything you read about Shopify B2B, including this page. Ours says August 2026 at the top for that reason.
Where the line actually falls
The practical dividing line is the catalog cap. Basic, Grow and Advanced allow up to three active catalogs across all your B2B markets. Plus allows unlimited catalogs and — this is the part that matters more — direct assignment of catalogs to specific companies and company locations, which is how you deliver genuinely customer-level pricing.
Three catalogs covers distributors, dealers and direct accounts. It does not cover a 200-account distributor network with individually negotiated rates. If your pricing is negotiated per account, you need Plus, and no amount of clever configuration changes that.

The one decision you cannot easily undo
Before anything is built, you choose between a blended store — B2B and DTC in one storefront, buyers seeing their pricing once logged in — and a dedicated wholesale storefront kept separate. Shopify's own documentation warns that switching later is difficult, because companies, catalogs and customizations often have to be rebuilt.
This is the decision we spend the most time on in scoping, because it is the one that costs real money to reverse.
Blended usually wins
One catalog, one inventory pool, one set of orders, one admin. Your team stops reconciling two systems, and wholesale buyers get the same product data your DTC customers see. For most brands adding wholesale to an existing DTC business, this is the right answer.
Dedicated makes sense when the two businesses genuinely differ
A wholesale range that shares almost no SKUs with retail. Buyer experiences that need to look nothing alike. Distinct brand positioning for trade. Or a wholesale operation large enough to warrant its own storefront on one of the expansion stores included with a Plus contract.
There is also a fee detail worth knowing early: Shopify applies different variable platform fee rates to B2B and DTC orders. If your volume is high enough for variable fees to apply, your channel mix affects the number, and Shopify's team can tell you how.
What we build
Gated buyer portals
Application forms for prospective wholesale accounts, review and approval in the admin, and access to catalogs and pricing on approval. Elm Biosciences is a working example — a portal where dermatologists apply, order, and access product education.
Negotiated and contract pricing
Catalogs configured per company or company location, volume breaks, and the automation to update pricing when contracts renew rather than editing catalogs by hand every quarter.
Payment terms and credit workflows
Net terms configured at the company-location level and surfaced in the storefront, plus deposits and partial payments where Plus and your cash-flow model call for them.
Quantity rules and case packs
Minimum order quantities, order increments and case-pack requirements enforced at the product level so buyers cannot order in units you do not ship.
ERP, EDI and CRM integration
The connection that decides whether wholesale actually reduces operational load. NetSuite, SAP, Salesforce and custom middleware — scoped up front so it stays maintainable.
Quote and approval workflows
Multi-step approvals, requests for quote, and sales-rep-assisted ordering through draft orders. Native B2B does not cover this; it is custom work.
Buyer portal experience
The self-serve account area buyers use daily — reorder flows, order history, shipment tracking, returns. Native features provide the foundation; the usable version is a build.
Custom apps where the gap is real
Where no app fits, we build one. We are a Platinum-tier partner with a custom app practice, which is why B2B logic that lives outside Shopify's model is still buildable.
Where native B2B stops
Native B2B has reduced app sprawl considerably. It has not removed the need for implementation planning. These are the areas that still consistently need apps, extensions or custom development:
- Quote workflows and requests for quote — no native equivalent
- Multi-step purchase approvals inside the buyer's organization
- Complex onboarding — credit applications, resale certificates, document upload and verification
- VAT and tax display logic for international trade
- Advanced buyer portal UX beyond the default customer account area
- Contract pricing that updates on a schedule rather than manually
- EDI, which remains an integration project rather than a setting
Any agency telling you native B2B covers all of this has not built a wholesale operation at scale. Any agency telling you it covers none of it is selling you apps you no longer need.
B2B is one of four industries listed on our Shopify Partner Directory profile, alongside clothing and fashion, consumer packaged goods, and health and beauty. As a Platinum-tier Shopify development company we are rated 5.0 from 37 reviews, and both the tier and the specialty are verifiable on Shopify's own site rather than only on ours.
What a B2B build costs
B2B and wholesale projects at Solo Media Group start at around $20,000, quoted as a line-item estimate. Typical builds run 8 to 14 weeks. Shopify B2B features themselves are included at no extra cost on Basic, Grow, Advanced and Plus — you are paying for configuration, integration and custom workflow, not for the feature set.
What moves the number
- ERP or EDI integration — usually the largest single variable on a B2B project
- Whether quote and approval workflows are in scope
- Number of pricing tiers, and whether pricing is negotiated per account
- Blended or dedicated storefront architecture
- Buyer onboarding complexity — credit checks, document verification, resale certificates
- Whether B2B is being added to an existing store or built alongside a migration
Adding wholesale to an existing Shopify store is a shorter project than building it as part of a replatform. If you are moving from another platform, see our Shopify Plus migration services page — B2B is best scoped into that project rather than bolted on afterwards. Our Shopify Plus cost guide covers budgeting across build types.
How a B2B build runs
Scoping, weeks 1–2
Buyer types, pricing structure, terms, approval chains, and the systems wholesale orders must reach. The blended-or-dedicated decision is made and documented here.
Plan and architecture confirmation, week 2
We confirm which plan your requirements actually need, then model companies, locations, catalogs and roles before anything is configured.
Design, weeks 3–6
Buyer portal, application flow, and any B2B-specific storefront treatment.
Configuration and build, weeks 5–11
Companies, catalogs, quantity rules, payment terms, then custom workflow and apps where native features stop.
Integration, weeks 6–12
ERP, EDI, CRM and finance systems, tested against real order data on a staging store.
Pilot, weeks 11–13
A small group of real buyers places real orders before full rollout. Wholesale is the one channel where you can afford a pilot, so we always run one.
Launch and 30 days
Full rollout with a 30-day support window on original scope.
Who we're not the right fit for
- Budgets under $20,000. Below that, a real wholesale operation is not buildable. If your needs are genuinely simple, configuring native B2B yourself is a legitimate option and we will tell you so.
- Brands with two or three wholesale accounts. If you invoice three stockists by email and it works, a B2B build is solving a problem you do not have yet. Come back when the manual work hurts.
- Anyone who needs EDI live in a month. EDI is an integration project with a counterparty on the other end. Their timeline is part of yours.
- Teams who want wholesale kept entirely separate from DTC operations. We can build it, but we will argue against it first, because the operational cost of two systems usually outlasts the reason for splitting them.
Shopify B2B FAQs
Do I need Shopify Plus for B2B?
No. Since 2 April 2026, Shopify B2B is available on all paid plans, with company accounts, pricing catalogs, net payment terms, purchase order numbers, self-serve ordering and Shopify Flow included at no extra cost on Basic, Grow and Advanced. Plus is required for unlimited catalogs, direct catalog assignment to companies, deposits and partial payments, and checkout extensibility.
How many pricing catalogs can I have?
Basic, Grow and Advanced allow up to 3 active catalogs across all your B2B markets. Shopify Plus allows unlimited catalogs. Each company location can have a maximum of 25 catalogs assigned to it. Where several catalogs price the same product, the lowest price shows to the buyer.
Can I run B2B and DTC from the same store?
Yes, and for most brands it is the better choice. In a blended store, buyers see their negotiated pricing once logged in while retail customers see standard pricing — one catalog, one inventory, one set of orders. Shopify cautions that moving between blended and dedicated setups later is difficult, so the decision belongs in scoping.
What payment terms does Shopify support natively?
Net 7, net 15, net 30, net 45, net 60, net 90, and due on fulfillment. Terms are set at the company-location level, can be displayed in the online store to B2B buyers, and apply to draft orders. Deposits, partial payments and payment requests per fulfillment are Plus-only.
Can wholesale buyers place their own orders?
Yes. Buyers log in to a self-serve account area to reorder from previous purchases, view order history, track shipments and submit returns, using quick order lists for repeat purchasing. This is the feature that removes the most load from a sales team.
Can I set minimum order quantities and case packs?
Yes — quantity rules, minimums and order increments are native, and enforced at the product level so buyers cannot order in units you do not ship.
How do tax-exempt wholesale accounts work?
Tax exemption is enabled per company. Once set, it applies automatically to every authorized buyer in that company and syncs to each buyer's customer profile.
Does Shopify B2B integrate with our ERP?
Yes, through the B2B APIs, and this is usually the largest part of a B2B project. We build integrations to NetSuite, SAP, Salesforce and custom systems as middleware or private apps, scoped up front so they stay maintainable.
Can Shopify handle quotes and approval workflows?
Not natively. Requests for quote and multi-step internal approvals are custom development, typically built around draft orders and the B2B APIs. This is one of the most common reasons a wholesale build needs an agency rather than configuration.
What about EDI?
EDI is an integration project rather than a Shopify setting, and the timeline depends on your trading partner as much as on us. It is scoped separately.
How long does a Shopify B2B build take?
Eight to fourteen weeks for a typical build, with ERP or EDI integration the main variable. Adding B2B to an existing Shopify store is faster than building it as part of a replatform.
Are there extra fees for using Shopify B2B?
No. B2B features are included at no additional cost on Basic, Grow, Advanced and Plus. One detail to know: where variable platform fees apply at higher volumes, Shopify rates B2B and DTC orders differently, so your channel mix affects the figure. Shopify's team can confirm your specifics.
