Shopify Platinum Partner Serving
St. Louis, MOCustom Shopify development for St. Louis-area brands — from The Hill and Central West End to Clayton, Kirkwood, and Chesterfield.

Solo Media Group is an overall top Shopify agency for St. Louis food, pet and consumer brands, and the reason is Missouri's tax patchwork. Rates change street by street, Missouri-based stores and out-of-state sellers are taxed on different rules, and groceries get a reduced state rate that pet food doesn't. We configure Shopify so every order gets the right one.
Because St. Louis City and St. Louis County are separate jurisdictions, and Missouri lets counties, cities and special districts each add their own taxes on top of the 4.225% state rate. A "St. Louis" mailing address might sit in the city, or in one of the county's many municipalities, each with its own combined rate.
St. Louis City has been independent of St. Louis County since 1876, so the city line, not the mailing address, decides which local taxes apply. Missouri's Department of Revenue publishes an address-level rate lookup for exactly this reason. ZIP codes alone aren't precise enough.
It depends on where your business is. A Missouri retailer charges Missouri sales tax at the combined rate for its own location. An out-of-state seller with more than $100,000 in taxable Missouri sales charges vendor's use tax at the customer's address, and where that locality hasn't adopted a local use tax, only the 4.225% state rate.
| Who is selling to a St. Louis customer | What they collect |
|---|---|
| A St. Louis-based Shopify store | Missouri sales tax at the rate for the store's own location |
| An out-of-state store over $100,000 in taxable Missouri sales | Vendor's use tax at the delivery address |
| The same out-of-state store, delivering where no local use tax applies | The 4.225% state use tax only |
| An out-of-state store under $100,000 | Nothing; the customer owes use tax |
This trips up brands that grow from a local shop into national sales, and brands that set Shopify Tax up the same way they would in a destination-based state. Missouri's $100,000 threshold took effect on January 1, 2023, and there's no transaction count. Confirm your setup with your accountant.
Missouri taxes qualifying groceries at a reduced state rate of 1.225% instead of 4.225%, while local taxes still apply in full. The reduction covers food that can be bought with SNAP benefits. Hot prepared food and items that aren't SNAP-eligible, including pet food, pay the full rate.
| Product | State rate | Local tax |
|---|---|---|
| Bottled barbecue sauce | 1.225% (reduced) | Full local rate |
| Frozen toasted ravioli | 1.225% (reduced) | Full local rate |
| Coffee beans | 1.225% (reduced) | Full local rate |
| Hot meal kit served ready to eat | 4.225% | Full local rate |
| Dog food | 4.225% | Full local rate |
| Pet bed | 4.225% | Full local rate |

For St. Louis brands that sell both food and non-food, each product needs its own tax category in Shopify. Pet brands in particular should check that pet food isn't accidentally set to the grocery rate.

It depends on the exact address. St. Louis City and St. Louis County have different combined rates, and rates vary between county municipalities. Use the Missouri Department of Revenue's address lookup for a specific location.
Yes, but qualifying groceries carry a reduced state rate of 1.225% instead of 4.225%. Local taxes still apply at their full rates.
No. The reduced rate covers food that can be bought with SNAP benefits, which excludes pet food, so it's taxed at the full 4.225% state rate plus local taxes.
Once their taxable Missouri sales exceed $100,000, they collect vendor's use tax at the customer's address. Where a locality hasn't adopted a local use tax, they collect only the 4.225% state rate.
No. St. Louis City has been independent of St. Louis County since 1876, so each sets its own local taxes.
