Migrate from Volusion to Shopify (2026): A Complete Guide

Migrate from Volusion to Shopify (2026): A Complete Guide - SOLO MEDIA GROUP

TL;DR

  • Almost everything moves except customer passwords, which can't transfer between platforms for security reasons.
  • The single biggest risk is URL redirects, and it's entirely preventable with careful planning.
  • Budget two to four weeks for the data move on a straightforward Volusion store, plus reconciliation and a parallel period.
  • Three cost tiers, solving genuinely different problems: automated tools from roughly $150, data migration services from $1,500, full replatform from $20,000.

Disclosure: we're a Shopify development agency that runs these migrations. Most Volusion comparisons you'll read are written by affiliates paid on signup. Weigh both accordingly.

Should you migrate at all?

The genuinely open question isn't which platform is better. For a new store in 2026 the case for Volusion is thin, and everyone knows it. The real question is whether your existing Volusion store is worth moving, and that depends on facts about your business rather than a feature table.

6 Reasons brands actually leave Volusion

1. The annual sales cap. Volusion caps revenue by plan. The $35 Personal plan is limited to $50,000 in gross merchandise value per year and 100 products, with a single staff account. Exceed it and you upgrade whether or not the higher plan's features are useful. Shopify has no revenue caps and no product limits on any plan.

Volusion publishes a maximum GMV per year on every plan below Prime, alongside product and staff-account limits. Screenshot of Volusion's own pricing page, August 2026.

Shopify's plans differ on card rates, staff seats and features. There is no GMV ceiling and no product limit on any tier. Screenshot of Shopify's own pricing page, August 2026.

On Volusion, growth triggers cost. On Shopify, growth is what makes the cost worth paying. One analysis put annual total cost for a small business at roughly $1,200–$1,500 on Volusion against $900–$1,200 on Shopify, the reverse of what sticker prices suggest.

2. No native blog. Content has to run on a separate platform, usually a subdomain, which fragments authority because search engines treat a subdomain as a separate property. That's a structural search engine optimization problem, not a preference. Shopify includes a blog on every plan with control over meta description and URL structure per post.

3. Apps and capability. Shopify's extensive app ecosystem covers subscriptions, bundling, ERP connections and B2B pricing. Volusion's selection covers the basics and thins quickly beyond that.

4. International selling. Shopify Payments works in 23 countries; Volusion Payments is US-only. Volusion's transaction fees look lower on paper — 1.25%, 0.65% and 0.35% by plan against Shopify's 2%, 1% and 0.6% — but both waive fees entirely when you use their own processor. Sell from Canada, the UK, Australia or the EU and Volusion's fees become unavoidable while Shopify's become zero. Volusion's gateway also carries a $10 monthly maintenance charge that's easy to miss.

5. Retail and multi-currency. Shopify has the most developed POS ecosystem of any hosted platform, with multi-currency native to Shopify Payments.

6. Platform stability. Volusion filed for Chapter 11 in 2020, emerged under new ownership, and hasn't recaptured meaningful market share. That doesn't make it unsafe today, but you're betting multi-year on a company with a narrower recovery margin. Shopify has roughly 4.6 million active stores, is publicly traded, and reports 99.99% uptime.

When staying on Volusion is the right call

We build on Shopify, so treat this as the section arguing against our own interest.

  • Your store works and your volume is stable. Migration has real cost in money, time and risk. Switching to switch is a bad trade.
  • You're comfortably inside the cap and avoiding fees matters. At low, predictable US volume, Volusion's structure can genuinely come out ahead.
  • Your needs are simple. Modest catalog, no blog requirement, no app dependencies, no international selling, no retail.
  • You can't fund a proper migration right now. A rushed migration is worse than a delayed one.

The honest test: name the specific thing you can't do today that you'll need next year. If you can't, you don't need to move yet.

What transfers, and what doesn't

Migrates cleanly from your Volusion store:

  • Volusion products, variants, stock status and inventory management data
  • Product descriptions and SEO fields, and you can migrate images alongside them
  • Categories, which become collections in Shopify
  • Customer accounts including names, email addresses, shipping addresses and billing address records
  • Historical orders with order status, line items and created date
  • Coupon codes and discount rules
  • Product reviews, with the right tooling

Doesn't migrate:

  • Customer passwords. These can't be migrated directly between ecommerce platforms for security reasons — passwords are stored hashed, not in readable form, and treating them as sensitive data is exactly why no tool moves them. Your customers will need to reset on first login. Plan an email explaining it, or you'll generate support tickets and lost sales on day one.
  • Custom functionality built against Volusion's system. It needs rebuilding, not porting.
  • Third-party integrations. Every ERP, accounting, 3PL or CRM connection has to be re-established.
  • Theme and design. Volusion templates don't convert. You're rebuilding the storefront.

Order IDs are worth a specific mention. Most automated tools can preserve order IDs, but not all do by default, and mismatched IDs break reconciliation with your accounting system. Confirm this before you start rather than after.

Migration limitations worth knowing before you quote

Three constraints shape every Volusion move, and knowing them up front is the difference between an estimate that holds and one that changes in week three.

Volusion's exports are CSV-based. Products, customer information and orders come out as a CSV file per record type, and column names do not match Shopify's import template. Field mapping is manual work, not a toggle.

Images sit outside the product export. Product images live at Volusion CDN URLs rather than inside the CSV, so they're extracted and re-uploaded separately. On a large catalog this is its own workstream.

Custom fields need a destination decided in advance. Anything Volusion holds outside its standard schema maps to Shopify metafields, and that mapping is a decision rather than a default.

The migration process, step by step

We've run this migration repeatedly, and the failures are consistent enough to be predictable, which means they're preventable. Our free 100-point migration checklist covers the full sequence across every source platform.

  1. Initial preparation. Take a full backup of your Volusion site before touching anything. Then build a detailed inventory of existing store data and integrations — what data types you hold, how many records of each, which third-party services connect where. Initial migration costs scale with the number of entities transferred, so this inventory also drives your quote.
  2. Clean the data first. Remove inactive products, duplicate entries and stale customer records before migrating rather than after. Moving junk costs the same as moving good data and you'll only delete it later. This step reliably shortens the whole project.
  3. Create your new Shopify account and development store. Build and test on a development store rather than a live one. This is your target cart, and nothing customer-facing changes until you're ready.
  4. Choose your migration method. Three realistic options, covered below, or work with a specialized Shopify Plus development agency to scope and run the move.
  5. Run a free demo migration. Most automated tools offer one. It moves a small sample so you can verify data mapping and data accuracy before committing to the full transfer. Check field-by-field: did prices carry correctly, did variants map, did the shipping price and tax price fields land where expected. A demo is the cheapest way to validate Volusion fields before paying for the full run.
  6. Map your URLs. This is the single most important step for preserving SEO rankings, and it's where most migrations fail. Volusion and Shopify structure product and category URLs differently, so nearly every URL changes. Build a one-to-one redirect map from every old URL to its closest new equivalent, planned before launch rather than after. Redirecting everything to the homepage is not a redirect strategy.
  7. Run the full migration. With mapping confirmed and the source store clean, the transfer itself is usually the easy part.
  8. Rebuild what didn't transfer. Theme, custom functionality, integrations, shipping zones, tax settings and payment configuration. Configure automated collections in the Shopify admin to replace Volusion customer groups and category logic.
  9. Test everything. Place real test orders. Check checkout, tax calculation, shipping price by zone, discount codes, email notifications and every integration. Test on mobile specifically. Testing is what separates a smooth transfer from a public one.
  10. Point your domain. Update DNS to point your domain directly at Shopify. Done correctly this delivers effectively zero downtime.
  11. Post-migration monitoring. Submit a new sitemap to Google, then watch Google Search Console daily for the first fortnight for 404s, broken links, crawl errors and traffic drops. Catching a redirect gap in week one is trivial. Catching it in month three isn't.

What a migration costs

Three tiers, solving genuinely different problems, and the pattern holds whether you're moving from Volusion, comparing a BigCommerce to Shopify migration, planning a Magento to Shopify Plus migration, or scoping a WooCommerce to Shopify migration:

Automated tools: roughly $150 to $2,000. Services like Cart2Cart's Store Migration app, installed from the Shopify App Store, move data between platforms. Pricing scales with record count, and migration insurance is usually available as an add-on. This covers data transfer only — not design, not integrations, not redirects.

Data migration services: roughly $1,500 to $5,000. Someone runs the tool for you and validates the output. Still data-focused.

Full replatform: $20,000 and up. Design, custom development, integration rebuilds, redirect strategy, testing and post-launch support. That's our Shopify Plus migration services, and it's a different product rather than an expensive version of the same one.

Choosing between them honestly: if you have a simple catalog, no custom functionality and no integrations, an automated tool plus your own redirect work is genuinely sufficient. If you have custom logic, connected systems, or meaningful organic traffic to protect, the tool moves your data and leaves you with the hard 80% of the project.

If you're also weighing whether to land on standard Shopify or Plus, Shopify Plus vs Shopify in 2026 covers the qualifying triggers, and Shopify Plus cost in 2026 covers the platform fee separately from agency fees.

How long it takes

Two to four weeks for the data transfer on a straightforward Volusion store, plus reconciliation and a parallel period before decommissioning. Complex catalogs, custom functionality and multiple integrations extend it considerably.

Judge a migration on the first month after cutover rather than on the transfer itself. That's when redirect gaps, integration failures and tax configuration errors actually surface.

What a successful Volusion migration looks like

Six checks in the first 48 hours. If any fails, fix it before promoting the new store.

Check Pass condition
Redirect sample 20 old Volusion URLs all return 301 to the right page
Product count Matches the count you recorded in step 1
Order count Matches source, with IDs preserved
Customer count Matches, with marketing consent intact
Test order One real order end to end, every payment method
SSL Padlock present on the custom domain

A successful Volusion migration is one where these six pass and Search Console shows no coverage errors after a fortnight, or you fix any issues surfaced by a focused Shopify migration SEO audit. Everything else is polish.

Post-migration optimization

The work doesn't end at launch. The first 90 days is where most of the value gets captured: fixing whatever monitoring surfaces, tuning site speed on the new theme, rebuilding email marketing flows, and taking advantage of the capabilities you moved for in the first place. Our Shopify migration and growth guides cover rankings protection in more depth.

Transaction Fees: What You'll Actually Pay

The headline rates, and why they usually don't matter

Plan level Volusion Shopify
Entry 1.25% 2.0%
Mid 0.65% 1.0%
Higher 0.35% 0.6%
Using the native processor 0% 0%
Why the comparison collapses: both platforms waive these fees entirely when you use their own payment processor, and most merchants do. For the majority of stores the platform fee is zero on either side.
Where it does matter: Shopify Payments is available in 23 countries. Volusion Payments is US‑only. If you sell from outside the US, Volusion's "lower" fees become unavoidable while Shopify's become zero. Volusion's gateway also carries a $10 monthly maintenance charge.

Verified August 2026. Card processing rates are separate and apply on both platforms.

Frequently asked questions

How do I migrate from Volusion to Shopify?

Back up your Volusion store, inventory your data and integrations, clean out inactive products, create a Shopify development store, run a free demo migration to verify data mapping, build a one-to-one URL redirect map, run the full migration, rebuild what didn't transfer, test thoroughly, point your DNS, then monitor Google Search Console for 404s and traffic drops.

What are the migration limitations from Volusion?

Three matter. Exports are CSV-based and column names don't match Shopify's import template, so field mapping is manual. Product images sit at Volusion CDN URLs outside the product export and are extracted separately. And custom fields need mapping to Shopify metafields, which is a decision made in advance rather than a default.

Can customer passwords be migrated from Volusion to Shopify?

No. Passwords are stored hashed rather than in readable form, so they can't move between ecommerce platforms for data security reasons. Customers reset on first login to the new store. Email them in advance to avoid confusion and support volume.

Will I lose SEO rankings migrating from Volusion to Shopify?

Only if redirects are handled badly. URL structures differ, so nearly every URL changes. One-to-one redirect mapping planned before launch, plus a content audit of top-ranking pages and a fresh sitemap submitted after cutover, is what prevents ranking loss. If traffic has already dropped, a migration SEO audit diagnoses the cause within 48 hours.

Can I keep my order history when I move to Shopify?

Yes. Historical orders including order status, line items and created date can migrate, and most automated tools can preserve order IDs. Confirm ID preservation before starting, since mismatched IDs break accounting reconciliation.

How much does a Volusion to Shopify migration cost?

Automated tools run roughly $150 to $2,000 depending on record count. Data migration services run roughly $1,500 to $5,000. A full replatform including design, integrations and redirect strategy starts around $20,000. They solve different problems rather than being cheaper versions of each other.

How long does the Shopify migration process take?

Two to four weeks for the data move on a straightforward store, plus reconciliation and a parallel period. Complex catalogs and heavy integrations extend it.

Can I migrate with zero downtime?

Effectively, yes. You build on a Shopify development store while your Volusion site stays live, then point your domain directly at Shopify once testing is complete. The switch itself is a DNS change.

Should I migrate from Volusion at all?

Only if you can name the specific thing you can't do today that you'll need next year. Common triggers are the annual sales cap, the lack of a native blog, app limitations, and international selling, since Volusion Payments is US-only. If your store works, your volume is stable and none of those apply, staying is the better trade.

Is Shopify better than Volusion?

For most merchants, yes. Shopify offers unlimited products, no sales caps, an extensive app ecosystem, free themes, a native blog, multi-currency and a more developed POS. Volusion is cheaper at entry and can have lower effective transaction fees at low US volume, but the capability gap widens as a store grows.

Did Volusion go out of business?

No. Volusion filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 2020, emerged under new ownership and continues to operate. It hasn't recovered significant market share since.
