Supplement brands break Shopify in two places: subscriptions and compliance.

Most revenue comes from repeat orders, so the subscription platform is a build decision rather than an app install.

Every structure/function claim needs the FDA disclaimer on the same page, and FDA must be notified within 30 days of first use.

Weight-loss and muscle-building products shipped to New York need an 18+ age check at checkout and ID at delivery.

And payment processors treat health claims as a risk category — your copy can cost you your checkout.

What makes supplements different on Shopify?

Supplements are different because the product page is a regulated document. What you say about an ingredient decides your disclaimer obligations, your ad eligibility and sometimes your payment processing.

Most ecommerce builds treat copy as marketing. In supplements, a product description can trigger an FDA notification, a Google Shopping disapproval or a processor review.

Supplements are also a replenishment business. A customer who buys once and never subscribes is usually a loss after acquisition costs. The store has to earn the second order.

The one decision you cannot easily undo

Where your compliance lives in the store.

Disclaimers, Supplement Facts panels, age restrictions and claim language can be built three ways. Changing your mind later means editing every product by hand.

ApproachWorks whenBreaks when
Pasted into each product descriptionYou have under ten products and one person writes copyA claim review or rule change means editing every product
Structured product data rendered by the themeYou want one template to control every disclaimer and panelNobody owns the data, so fields go stale
Structured data plus rules tied to product typeSome products need age gates, some claims need disclaimers, some markets differOnly breaks if skipped at launch

The third approach costs more on day one and far less every day after. Build it before the catalog grows, not after the first compliance scare.

The rules that shape a supplement store

This section explains how regulations affect store design. It is not legal advice. Solo Media Group works alongside your regulatory counsel, not in place of them.

RuleWhat it requiresWhat it means for the store
FDA structure/function claims, 21 CFR 101.93The FDA disclaimer wherever a claim appears. FDA notification no later than 30 days after first marketing the claimDisclaimers rendered by template, not typed per product. New claims flagged before publishing
FDA serious adverse event reportingSerious adverse events reported to FDA no later than 15 business days after the report is received. Label must carry a domestic address or phone numberA clear reporting path on the site, and customer service routing that catches reports
New York General Business Law 391-ooNo sales of weight-loss or muscle-building supplements to under-18s, effective 22 April 2024Age verification at checkout for affected products shipped to New York, and a shipping method that requires an 18+ signature with proof of age shown to the carrier
FTC Consumer Reviews and Testimonials RuleBans fake reviews, buying positive reviews and suppressing negative ones, in effect 21 October 2024Review apps and incentive programs configured so they cannot cross the line
Subscription cancellation: ROSCA and state auto-renewal lawsClear disclosure before billing and a simple way to cancelCancellation built to the strictest state standard, not the minimum
Google Shopping: unapproved pharmaceuticals and supplementsNamed ingredients, including ephedra and kratom, are not allowed in Shopping ads or free listingsProduct feed rules that exclude affected products before Google does

On the disclaimer specifically

21 CFR 101.93 fixes the wording. This is the string your template renders:

This statement has not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.

The regulation lets the disclaimer sit next to the claim, or be linked by a symbol such as an asterisk and set off in a box. It must appear on each panel or page where a claim appears. The rule is written for labels. The safe practice online is to mirror it on every product page, collection page and landing page carrying a claim.

On click-to-cancel

The FTC's Click-to-Cancel rule was vacated by the Eighth Circuit in July 2025 on procedural grounds. The FTC began a fresh rulemaking, submitting a draft advance notice of proposed rulemaking in January 2026. Meanwhile it continues to enforce ROSCA and Section 5. California, Colorado, Minnesota and New York have also strengthened their own cancellation rules. The practical answer is the same either way: make canceling as easy as subscribing.

Do you need Shopify Plus for a supplement brand?

Usually not at launch. Subscriptions, bundles, age gates and compliant product pages all work on standard Shopify plans.

Plus becomes worth it whenWhy
Checkout needs custom logicAge verification, product-specific restrictions or subscription rules inside checkout
You sell internationally with separate storefrontsExpansion stores keep market-specific claims and labeling apart
Subscription volume strains API limitsHeavy sync between Shopify, the subscription platform, ERP and 3PL
Wholesale runs alongside DTCGyms, clinics and retailers ordering at scale

Wonder Paws runs its subscription programme on a native Shopify subscription solution built for it, integrated with Stay AI. Plenty of supplement brands upgrade before they need to.

What we build for supplement brands

Subscriptions and retention

  • Subscribe-and-save designed around real replenishment cycles, such as a 30-day bottle on a 30-day cadence
  • Subscription platform setup and migration, including Stay AI, Recharge and Skio
  • Cancellation and skip flows that retain customers without breaking cancellation law
  • Klaviyo flows timed to when a bottle runs out, not to a calendar

Compliant product pages

  • Supplement Facts panels as structured data, not an uploaded image
  • FDA disclaimers rendered by template wherever a claim appears
  • Benefit-led product pages that stay inside structure/function language
  • Third-party testing and certification badges placed where buyers look

Commerce mechanics

  • Bundles and stacks built around outcomes, such as sleep, energy or recovery
  • Product finder quizzes that recommend without making disease claims
  • Age verification for restricted products and restricted states
  • Zip-code-based shipping and delivery rules

Supplement work we have delivered

ProSupps: sports nutrition

Solo Media Group redesigned ProSupps' product pages from ingredient-heavy layouts with no clear hierarchy into benefit-driven pages. The rebuild added visible certifications, athlete stories and clear subscription and shipping details. Bundles were relabelled around outcomes such as Energy & Focus, Pump & Performance and Stimulant-Free. Sticky navigation and persistent cart access reduced friction on mobile.

Wonder Paws: pet supplements

Wonder Paws sells vet-approved supplements made in the USA, led by Omega Max. Solo Media Group built a native Shopify subscription solution integrated with Stay AI, which manages customer profiles, billing cycles, failed payments and order history. What a supplement Shopify build costs

Ranges, because a quote before a scoping call is a guess with a number attached.

ScopeTypical rangeWhat it covers
Theme customization$8k to $25kPremium theme, compliant product templates, subscription app setup
Custom build on Shopify$25k to $75kCustom theme, structured compliance data, quiz, bundles, integrations
Custom build on Shopify Plus$60k to $150k+Checkout logic, expansion stores, ERP and 3PL at scale
Subscription platform migration$10k to $40kMoving subscribers, cadences and payment methods without losing revenue
Ongoing growth retainer$4k to $15k/monthCRO, retention, subscription optimization, feature work

What moves the number: subscriber count if you are migrating, how many products need restrictions, how many systems touch inventory, and whether you need Plus. Full rates are on Shopify Plus cost.

How a supplement build runs

StageWhat happensTypical duration
ScopingClaims audit, subscription review, integration inventory1 to 2 weeks
DesignProduct, bundle, quiz and subscription templates2 to 4 weeks
BuildTheme, compliance data, subscription platform, integrations4 to 10 weeks
Migration and QASubscribers, redirects, age gates and checkout tested2 to 4 weeks
Launch and stabilizeCutover, subscription monitoring, warranty window2 weeks

The claims audit comes first because every template inherits it.

Who we are not the right fit for

  • Dropship supplement catalogs. The economics do not support a custom build, and the compliance risk sits with you anyway.
  • Brands making disease claims. Solo Media Group will not build pages that say a supplement treats or cures a condition.
  • Brands wanting paid media and influencer management. Solo Media Group builds and grows Shopify stores. Pick a specialist for the rest.
  • Brands under roughly $8k of budget. A premium theme and a subscription app will serve you better. Solo Media Group will say so.

Shopify supplement FAQs

Can you sell supplements on Shopify?

Yes. Shopify supports supplement brands of every size, including subscriptions and bundles. The caveat is payments. Shopify's eligibility rules list “pseudo pharmaceuticals” that make unverified health claims as a restricted category. How you write your claims affects whether Shopify Payments approves you.

Is it legal to sell supplements online?

Yes. FDA does not approve dietary supplements before they are sold. The company selling them is responsible for safety, labeling and truthful claims. That means correct Supplement Facts panels, the FDA disclaimer beside any structure/function claim, and no disease claims.

Do I need a license to sell supplements in the US?

There is no federal license to sell supplements. You need the usual business registration and state sales tax permits. The facility that manufactures, packs or holds the product must be registered with FDA and follow current good manufacturing practices. Confirm your specific situation with regulatory counsel.

Can I dropship supplements?

Legally, yes. Practically, your name on the label makes you responsible for it. Serious adverse event reporting duties apply to the manufacturer, packer or distributor named on the label. Many dropship catalogs also carry claims the seller never checked.

What products are prohibited on Shopify?

Shopify defers to its payment processors' prohibited and restricted business lists. For supplements, the category to watch is products making unverified health claims. Separately, Google bans named ingredients such as ephedra and kratom from Shopping ads and free listings.

What is the best platform to sell supplements on?

For a brand selling direct, Shopify is the strongest choice because of its subscription ecosystem and app support. Most supplement brands also sell on Amazon. The two work together: Amazon for discovery, Shopify for subscribers and margin.

What are the key services a Shopify agency provides for health product companies?

Subscription setup, compliant product page templates, bundle and quiz builds, age verification, payment and checkout configuration, integrations with ERP and 3PL systems, migration, and ongoing conversion work. For supplements, the compliance templates matter most and get discussed least.

How do I choose a Shopify agency for a supplement product line?

Ask four questions. How would you render our FDA disclaimers across the site? How do you handle cancellation flows under state auto-renewal laws? Which subscription platforms have you migrated? Who specifically will work on our store? An agency that cannot answer the first two has not built for supplements.

What questions should I ask a potential ecommerce agency for my supplement business?

Beyond the four above: can you show a supplement store you built, and what would you change now? How do you configure review apps under the FTC reviews rule? What happens to our subscribers during migration? Get the answers in writing.

How do Shopify agencies assist with compliance for health product sales?

A good agency builds compliance into the store's structure. Disclaimers render by template, Supplement Facts panels live as structured data, age gates attach to restricted products, and review tools are configured within FTC rules. The agency does not replace your regulatory counsel. It makes their decisions enforceable across every page.

What are common challenges for supplement brands on Shopify, and how do agencies help?

Subscription churn, payment processor reviews, Google Shopping disapprovals, claim language that drifts over time, and cancellation rules that change by state. An agency helps by structuring the store so each of these is controlled in one place rather than across hundreds of product pages.

What are the best practices for supplement product page design on Shopify?

Lead with the benefit in structure/function language. Show the Supplement Facts panel as readable text, not only an image. Place certifications and third-party testing near the add-to-cart. Offer subscribe-and-save as the default option where it suits the product. Keep the FDA disclaimer beside every claim.

Can you find a Shopify expert with experience in subscription models for supplements?

Solo Media Group has built supplement subscriptions on Stay AI for Wonder Paws, and rebuilt Manukora's subscription logic for a 32% increase in subscription conversions. Ask any agency which subscription platforms they have migrated, not just installed.

Are there affordable Shopify experts for supplement brand websites?

Yes. Affordable usually means narrowing scope, not cheaper hours. A premium theme with compliant templates and a subscription app costs $8k to $25k. That serves most supplement brands until repeat revenue justifies a custom build.

What do Shopify agency packages for supplement companies include?

Solo Media Group scopes per project rather than selling packages. A typical engagement covers a claims audit, subscription setup, compliant templates, design, build, integrations, migration with a redirect plan, QA and a warranty window.

How do pricing models compare for Shopify agencies in health and fitness?

Three models dominate. Fixed-price projects suit defined builds. Monthly retainers suit ongoing CRO and retention work. Hourly billing suits small fixes. For supplements, a fixed build followed by a retention retainer is the most common pattern.

Do Shopify agencies offer design and SEO for supplement stores?

Most offer design. SEO for supplements is harder because Google holds health content to a higher standard. Solo Media Group builds structured collections and content that support organic search, as with Wonder Paws. Specialist supplement SEO agencies go further on content.

Do Shopify marketing agencies focus on supplement products?

Some do. Solo Media Group builds and grows Shopify stores, and works alongside your paid media and influencer partners rather than replacing them.

Is Shopify Plus worth it for a supplement brand?

When checkout needs custom logic, when you run separate international storefronts, or when subscription volume strains API limits. Before that, standard Shopify handles subscriptions, bundles and compliant pages well.

What ecommerce solutions exist for supplement brands beyond basic Shopify?

The usual additions are a dedicated subscription platform, a quiz or product finder, an age verification app, a reviews platform configured within FTC rules, Klaviyo for retention, and ERP or 3PL integration. Each should be chosen for your model, not installed by default.

Where can I see case studies of supplement brands built with a Shopify agency?

Solo Media Group publishes case studies for ProSupps, Wonder Paws and Manukora at /blogs/case-studies. Read them for what is measured rather than what is claimed.
